Athlete of the Month: Phillip Hopkins

Fit Strong United would like to announce their Athlete of the Month Phillip Hopkins!

Words from Coach Isaac:

“Phillips intensity and efforts have greatly increased over the last few months. Starting with his first competition for Battle for the Monument, his attitude and work ethic has inspired many gym members around him. At 47 years of age, Phillip keeps getting better and better.”

“He is constantly in the gym… Even if work, family, or life tries to get in the way. No excuses. HE works hard even when not feeling it. Always smiles, and brings his whole family to FSU.” -John White

Here are some fun facts about Phillip: 

  1. When did you start CrossFit?
    Five years total
  2. What is your biggest motivation? 
    What motivates me? The group that I work out with. Getting to see them, and also that we push each other further. Seeing yourself improve is what motivates me the most. I don’t see an end in sight. Other work outs I used to do, there was no competition because you have to be self-motivated. But here, my class motivates me. 
  3. What is your favorite lift?
    Bench press and squat cleans.
  4. How has CrossFit changed/ inspired your life?
    This is probably the healthiest I have ever been in my life. I have lost over 20 pounds, and redistributed lots of weight. I changed my entire prospective on diet and exercise. It has taken me and pushed me to places I have never thought I would get to. The combination of the cardio and strength training you cannot get that anywhere else except CrossFit. 
  5. What is your favorite quote?
    “When you come to a fork in the road, take it” -Yogi Berra.  The reason why I like that, a lot of people ask me how did you get to where you are today? I chose the hard path, when others chose an easy one. I postponed my life to concentrate on my career. When you come to the fork in the road, you are going to have to take one option. That’s why I like that quote. 
  6. What is your favorite workout fuel?
  7. What is your favorite protein source? 
    I eat a lot of fish, chicken and beef
  8. What are your future goals?
    What I want to do is get to a point to where I am doing competitions head to head with guys my age. My goal is the whole package; I want to be good at everything. I want to do everything well and beat them by their numbers.
